10. What is Patient Capitalism?
If you have an interest in ethical corporations, you might have gone to a session called 'Moving Beyond the Buzz of Purpose and Impact.'
The session featured Christopher Gavigan, who started the Honest company with Jessica Alba. For those of you who don't know, the Honest company produces cosmetics, toiletries, and baby products that are completely free of anything that could be toxic or harmful. It grew out of research Gavigan did into the chemicals we ingest or spread on ourselves every day, and people asking him 'where can I get something safe?'
It's a neat story. The company since then has tried to stay true to its roots, accepting that they will grow more slowly, by insisting on doing things in a way they're completely happy with. This includes embedding days of service in their calendar, every year, more than once. 'This is how we know why we do the things we do,' says Gavigan.
It was a good session, and Nina Montgomery did an excellent job of teasing out the ideas of working with purpose. The only thing you might have wanted was a bit more of her own insight, and what she learned editing 'Perspectives on Purpose' - a study of corporate purpose in multiple contexts. Don't worry, though, I'm going to get it, read it, and tell you about it.
