20. The Second Golden Age of Audio

SXSW has a reputation for being ahead of the curve, for exploring trends as they are happening. The most famous example of that is the launch of Twitter in 2007, when all the tweets in the world were shown on a scrolling screen.

This year the zeitgeistiest elements may have been Blockchain and Cannabusiness, but Podcasting came a strong third. The standout podcasting session you would have found on the Tuesday afternoon - again I'm jumping ahead, and again there's a reason for that.

In the session you would have found have found Dawn Ostroff, the head of programming at the mighty Spotify talking with the leads of two podcasting powerhouses that Spotify has just acquired as part of a spending spree of hundreds of millions of dollars. The acquisitions are a clear statement of intent, and of the future importance of podcasting, and the people on stage, Matt Lieber of Gimlet and Michael Mignano of Anchor made it clear its a space to watch.

You would have found an overall tone of excitement. Spotify moved into podcasting 18 months ago, and in that time the number of people listening to podcasts has gone from 70 million to 90 million. The SXSW message here, get into podcasting, it's going to be huge. What will your podcast be?
