68. Using tech to understand immigration

SXSW is a constant flow of talks, discussions, performances, and movies, but it's also a massive opportunity to meet people. You can find one of the best venues for doing that here and an example of who you could have met here.

Another steady presence in the Rockefeller Global Innovation Zone was Duncan Lawrence, director of the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab.

The Immigration Policy Lab is an excellent example of the 'Tech for Good' theme that crosscut SXSW. It uses the most innovative computing tools, algorithms and AI to generate valuable new understanding of how immigration happens and how it can be done better.

A fascinating example is how they have processed vast amounts of data to understand where different kinds of refugees are most successful in their new homes. By understanding this, they can make recommendations, and maximise the possibility that refugees and immigrants will make happy new lives for themselves.
