47. Rethink CSR

The Line Hotel was the SXSW centre for the social impact strand of programming, and on Monday morning you would have found a session there about how private commerce can have social impact. If you weren't there you can find out more about it here.

The session was called 'Can the Private Sector Solve Inequality' and featured Parag Mehta, the executive director of the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. The driving theme was 'rethink CSR' - the centralising of CSR in corporate identity and activity.

The Mastercard Center is a combination of Mastercard business activity and Mastercard Philanthropy. It uses all the expertise of Mastercard - technical and digital - to make individuals and organisations better able to engage in commerce.

Mehta introduced a range of powerful ideas, based on the way the Mastercard Center empowers small businesses in the developing world. It's all about simple things like access to financial networks, loans, credit, and ways of exchanging money. The goal, he said is 'commercially sustainable social impact.' The Mastercard Center looks beyond the traditional partnerships with governments and NGOS, to linking with other companies that complement their specialties, which he calls 'Private-Private Partnerships.'

It was inspiring stuff. You can find out more about the Mastercard centre here.
