52. break the rules if...

SXSW is full of sessions that tell you how the world will be, or is, but others give you advice on how to be a part of that change, or how to achieve your goals. There are multiple mentor sessions, when you can talk to individuals in the business where you want to succeed.

Alternatively you can join the audience of a successful individual who tells you their secrets. One of them was C. Robert Cargill talking about writing screenplays that sell. You'll find more detail below, you can get an overview here.

Cargill was very pragmatic, giving you rules that work. The imperatives of writing style are to be 'LEAN and BOLD' - be crisp, clear, to the point, and write 90-120 pages of screenplay.

When you write as a newcomer, hit the notes that people expect. His recommendation is to be 75% familiar, and 25% new. Studios and audiences look for elements that they recognise, that can help them recognise the movie they're watching. By page 25-30 they must know what the film's about.

However, all of these rules come with a caveat. You can break them if you can think of something better.

Can you think of something better?
