57. Premiering at SXSW
Also appearing on the Austin red carpet were Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. They took centre stage on the Sunday night for the world premiere of their movie 'The Highwaymen.'
The movie is a retelling of the Bonnie and Clyde story, from the point of view of the aging Texas Rangers, Frank Hamer and Maney Gault recruited to track them down.
The film looks interesting. It's set at a time of poverty, and ranges among encampments of homeless people, and wide stretches of barren farmland, where flimsy houses seem to flap in the wind. The rangers wear suits, and drive cars down long straight roads, but its clear that they are old cowboys and this film is set at a time where the old ways of the wild west are still visible in a world that looks much like our own.
Some reviewers have criticised the acceptance of the lawmen's violence - the carrying out of virtual executions without the process of courts or law, and the obsession with countering the romanticism around Bonnie and Clyde. Its probably a theme that needs a counter argument, though, and its interesting that its done by a pair of aging cops who struggle to climb over a fence, or with basic target practice.
it's on Netflix now. Take a look.
