64. No courage without vulnerability

The SXSW keynote was rammed, obviously. Your chances of getting in were slim. I didn't manage it. Fortunately the keynote speaker was such a big deal that you can find the learning afterwards. thats what I did, and here it is.

The SXSW 2019 keynote was by Brene Brown. Brown is a Texas native who has made a globally recognised career has a public speaker on topics like vulnerability, shame, and courage. Her TED talk is one of the 5 most watched, and her books sell out the wazoo.

Brown is also the first speaker to have a talk put straight onto Netflix, and the talk is an easy way to get a sense of her and her mission.
Brown and her ideas were a perfect lead in to the themes of SXSW that have been written large through the posts you've found here. She is ultimately about connecting effectively and honestly with each other, with theories backed by solid research and understanding. She says bluntly 'not caring what others think is impossible, we have evolved, exactly, to respond to what others think of us.'

Another takeaway from her talk - on from dozens is that true belonging isn't fitting in. Belonging is not changing who you are, but it requires you to be truly who you are.

You can find Brene Brown on Netflix here.
