22. Elizabeth Moss, Brandi Carlile, and the Rock and Roll Moment
If you're a movie fan, SXSW would have looked different to you. There were premieres every night, with people crowded around the theatres, and paparazzi pictures being taken on the red carpet. The lines were long, though, and you have to be committed to get in to the screenings.
Some of the actors also made appearances in the wider conference, and if you wanted, you could have seen Elizabeth Moss, star of Us, speaking in the massive ballroom of the Convention Centre on the Sunday afternoon.
The most interesting thing about the session was that she was interviewed by music star Brandi Carlile. They know each other well, from the video that Moss directed and starred in for the Carlile song ''Party of One'
The interview was a warm and comfortable conversation between old friends. They talked about the making of the video, and about Moss's other projects, and about 'Her Smell' a new movie about a woman punk rock star which sounds like an incendiary must see.
One of the take away messages from the session was Carlile's concept of the 'Rock and Roll Moment' in the life of a song, that moment when she knows it well enough to play it, but not well enough to feel comfortable doing it. That moment of raw energy and uncertainty when things are at their youngest, most unpredictable and best.
Elizabeth Moss extended the idea 'Everything has a Rock and Roll Moment.'
