46. The sparkle and shine of kindness
There was a Saturday afternoon session, in the Palmer Events centre, that was so popular that if you were anything other than 10 minutes early, you ended up sitting on the floor. If sitting on the floor wasn't for you, you can find an overview of the session here, and details of two of the speakers here and here.
The session was on 'The Business of Making People Feel Good' and the third speaker was Sheena Wilde, director of philanthropy at Kendra Scott.
Kendra Scott is a jewellery and home accessories company, founded in 2002 by Austin resident Scott, and now valued at over a billion dollars. Kendra Scott is famous for her philanthropy, giving away millions of dollars, and over 75,000 (SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND!) pieces of jewellery.
As impressive as the giving was Sheena Wilde's insight into the corporate culture. Her explanation of the recruitment process was very different from the priorities of other organisations (qualifications, hunger, experience, etc): 'We hire on the basis of kindness and heart.'
Wilde also highlighted an interesting approach to existing staff. Their offices are filled with resources to make their working lives happier, including nursing rooms and nail bars. her explanation was striking and impressive and something you probably haven't heard senior staff from large corporations say:
'We want to thank our team for leaving their families and homes every day to come and work with us.'
